His Eminence Nubpa Rinpoche

His Eminence Nubpa Rinpoche (12th reincarnation) was born in 1942. Even before Nubpa Rinpoche was born, he was recognised by His Holiness the 34th Drikung Kyabgon Konchok Tenzin Shiwai Lodro as one of the six important reincarnated Lamas who looked after the Drikung Thil Monastery. Nubpa Rinpoche was then given the Dharma name of Konchok Tenzin Gonpo Yonten Gyatso by His Holiness the 34th Drikung Kyabgon. At a very young age, Nubpa Rinpoche entered the Drikung Thil Monastery to undergo ritual learning and practice. Nubpa Rinpoche also learned the thirteen major texts of the Sutra, Abhidharma and Vinaya. According to historical records, the first Nubpa Rinpoche Sekyong Gonpo Gyaltsen was recognized as the emanation of the Four-Arm Mahakala.

Most venerable Nubpa Rinpoche studied under many masters at Nechung Buddhist Institute in Lhasa before going to the Tibetan Language Department of the Advanced Buddhist Institute in Beijing. Nubpa rinpoche received many teachings, oral transmissions and practice instructions from great masters of the various different traditions. Among all of these, the main teachings Nubpa Rinpoche received are of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage.

As Nubpa Rinpoche is very well-versed in the Chinese Language, he is very active in text editing and translation projects. In particular, he has put together the collection of teachings of the 25th Drikung Kyabgon Rigzin Chodak for publication. Nubpa Rinpoche has made tremendous contribution to the protection of Tibetan Buddhist Culture.

In 1992, Nubpa Rinpoche left Tibet for India to look for His Holiness the 37th Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche. At the same time, Nubpa Rinpoche also undertook the translation and proof-reading of Buddhist texts.

In 1997, Nubpa Rinpoche overcame great difficulties before arriving at the holy place of Lapchi. At Lapchi, Nubpa Rinpoche did both short and long retreats. He also guided over 30 monks to do their three-year retreat in a Lapchi retreat center. In 1998, Nubpa Rinpoche originally decided to undergo long periods of retreat in Lapchi Snow Mountain. However, Rinpoche found out about the various difficulties exprienced by the monks and practitioners living in Lapchi Snow Mountain. Rinpoche could not bear to see this holy place decline. Hence, out of great compassion, Rinpoche changed his mind and decided to undergo short periods of retreat in Lapchi instead for the time being, so that he could carry out Dharma propagation activities to benefit sentient beings and also work on the restoration of Lapchi at the same time.

In 2002, Nubpa Rinpoche was specially requested by the two Holinesses to be responsible for the establishment of the Drikung Kagyu Religious Society and its future Dharma activites.
